The RM 62-01 is designed to be popular in a low-key, luxurious atmosphere. Its alarm function is transmitted only by vibration, proving its consideration and exquisite craftsmanship. Its existence is attributed to an absolutely single technical approach. This complication is extremely easy to use and reflects a paradox. Usually, you need to hear a valid alarm from a distance...but it needs to be kept within a few millimeters. We have explored the engineering field to protect our cheap swiss watches from shock and vibration, and suddenly we invite them into the heart of the movement. This is the bold pursuit behind the choice of materials and sizes, which constitutes the fun and rarity of the work.
Discretion is guaranteed
The RM 62-01 is absolutely silent compared to the traditional alarms and bells of most and past watches. The time hammer is not a hammer that produces sound by striking the struts, jaws or the inside of the casing, but transmits a time signal through vibrations that only the wearer can perceive. This consideration is always welcome in the atmosphere of the conference room, such as in the confined space of the first class.
However, such a vibration alarm must be designed so as not to affect the movement of the watch, which is a major problem. In the end, this was inspired by the vibration function of the early mobile phone, so it used a pure gold eccentric weight similar to an automatic rotor. A variety of technical questions must be answered before the entire movement is produced. Extreme function
The RM 62-01 is equipped with a range of sophisticated features for business travellers while breaking the rules of standard travel watches. It contains the UTC indicator for the second time zone, with a green pointer in the middle indicating the time. At 9 o'clock below the sapphire dial, the tourbillon has a 3 Hz free-running balance. The extra-large date is at 12 o'clock and is framed by a small hole with the typical red hatching of Richard Mille. Here, the movement's 70-hour power reserve indicator is at 11 o'clock.
All functions related to the vibration alarm are grouped in the lower part of the main dial. Among other things, this is the first watch with a function selector with five positions that can be adjusted for all settings. After selecting the appropriate function, the alarm can be adjusted to the nearest minute within 24 hours. The alarm itself has three indicators: On/Off, AM/PM and Power Reserve Indicator. The RM 62-01 follows the footsteps of the 2016 RM 50-02 Tourbillon Separate Timing ACJ, inheriting its unique lines. However, the roundabout of the RM 50-02 matches the white of the giant jet, and the RM 62-01 is inspired by the custom cabin interior of ACJ creative design director Sylvain Mariat, whose dark wood panels have a smooth depth. Sapphire glass is shaped like an airplane window and is the top of many indicators, which are still easily identifiable due to their color code and strong contrast. The ultra-wide diameter titanium crown is reminiscent of a jet turbine, while the pusher evokes the pylon profile that connects the engine to the wing.
The RM 62-01 has a double bezel and also has a sporting function on the back of the case. The second baffle is placed on a satin-finished titanium baffle and milled from a CarbonTPT® block to a thickness of only 1.8 mm. The choice of these materials goes beyond aesthetic considerations: Titanium/Carbon TPT® pairing provides the best weight to stiffness ratio within the functional range of RM 62-01. This combination ensures that the vibration generated by the alarm will be transmitted to the wrist and deflected from the movement and thus protected by the structure of the watch itself.
