Richard Mille (RM) recently launched its latest women's high jewelry watch—the RM HJ-02 Automatic Tourbillon. Looking back at 2020, the brand launched the RM HJ-01, marking a significant milestone in its foray into high jewelry watches. This release is extremely rare, with the entire collection being limited editions, each a unique work of art. The 12 watches are presented in four distinct color schemes: Pink Chase, Violet Variation, Blue Ballet, and Green Gamble, creating a captivating visual feast. Unlike traditional jewelry watches, the RM HJ-02 treats gemstones as an integral part of the watch's overall structure, rather than merely surface decoration. Inspired by the geometric language of Art Deco, Richard Mille's iconic tonneau-shaped case has been completely reimagined. It is no longer a single, continuous curve, but rather filled with sharp angles, layered facets, and asymmetrical three-dimensional structures. Each watch is set with up to 1,399 precious and decorative gemstones, including rubies, sapphires, diamonds, emeralds, Paraiba tourmalines, malachite, and mother-of-pearl. From the case and clasp to the movement, the exquisite gem-setting craftsmanship presents a kaleidoscope of colors.
Richard Mille employs three top-tier techniques—snow setting, bead setting, and bezel setting—to create these vibrant gemstones. The gem-setting and polishing processes alone require nearly 700 hours of meticulous handwork per watch (equivalent to approximately 88 working days), undoubtedly posing a tremendous challenge to the brand's in-house gem-setting team.
The RM HJ-02 watch is powered by the brand's in-house CRMT2 skeletonized automatic tourbillon movement, offering approximately 50 hours of power reserve. Its baseplate and bridges are crafted from 18K white gold and feature hand-finished micro-blasting and chamfering. Internally, it incorporates a variable inertia free-sprung balance wheel, significantly enhancing the movement's shock resistance. The traditional fine-tuning system has been abandoned, replaced by four adjustable weights directly placed on the balance wheel, allowing for more precise and stable adjustment of the balance wheel's inertia. Furthermore, the movement's decoration is breathtaking: the brand has used gemstones to outline the movement's lines, seamlessly integrating them with the watch's silhouette and highlighting the core mechanical structure, making the rapidly spinning mainspring barrel and variable inertia tourbillon gleam brilliantly.
