Following the instructions of the brand's founder Max Büsser to create "the greatest and wildest three-axis tourbillon ever created", master watchmaker Eric Coudray (a name indelibly associated with the rise of the multi-axis tourbillon in the new millennium) got to work . In Coudray's own estimation, the resulting mechanism (for which MB&F coined the term TriAx) is a hybrid between a tourbillon and a karrusel system.

In a tourbillon, the escape wheel is not driven directly, but rotates as the tourbillon carriage moves around the fixed wheel. In the karrusel, both the carrier and the escape wheel are directly driven by separate gear trains.
In the Legacy Machine Thunderdome, the three-axis rotary escapement combines the characteristics of both systems. The energy is delivered to the rotating cage via a two-speed split transmission operating according to the karrusel principle. Reversing the escapement’s geometry allows for greater balance, giving the watch a greater potential for timekeeping performance.
