AP’s Double Balance RO returns in a compact 37mm format in two new gold versions with a splash of colour on the flange.
Skeleton or openwork watches are a favourite among watch lovers, and the more complex the movement, the better. In 2016, Audemars Piguet doubled the viewing pleasure with the launch of the Royal Oak Double Balance Skeleton ref. 15407. As its name suggests, the movement features two balance wheels, one of which is exposed on the dial of the 41mm discount replica watches. The latest two watches in the collection are 37mm in diameter and come in white or rose gold, powered by the in-house calibre 3132. The novelty here, however, is the tone-on-tone colour matching, matching the colour of the case material to the movement.
The “two are better than one” philosophy of the RO Double Balance Skeleton, which features two balance wheels for improved chronometric performance and stability, is presented in this video. However, to access and regulate each balance spring individually, AP’s watchmakers placed the two balances and two balance springs on one axis, but separated them so that one is visible on the dial and the other on the back.
While the 41mm version is more popular, the 37mm version of the RO Double Balance is not new. It was unveiled in 2018 in a gorgeous frosted gold case. Today, AP offers two 37mm versions: one in white gold with a rhodium-toned movement and one in rose gold with gold finishes. Skeleton movements have been around at AP since the 1930s, removing as much material from the mainplate and bridges as possible to let light shine through and reveal the movement. Moving with the times, AP now uses CNC machines to cut the bridges into the desired shape and hand-finishes them using more traditional techniques.
A labyrinth of bridges reveals the exquisiteness of the patented automatic calibre 3132. One of the balance wheels rotates between 7 and 8 o'clock on the dial, while the other is visible on the caseback. Other components, such as the gear train and mainspring, are visible on the dial. The rhodium-toned bridges and movement of the white gold model are embellished with rubies and a light blue inner bezel, and the dial is surrounded by luminescent white gold hour markers.
The pink gold model has a more flamboyant personality with pink gold bridges and movement and a vivid purple flange. In contrast, the hands and hour markers are made of white gold and are treated with luminescent materials.
