From the beginning, Breitling’s founder focused on measuring time, speed, heart rate and sound. In short, anything that could be measured with a pocket watch. The Breitling founder was a visionary, and so was his son Gaston. In 1915, Gaston introduced the first wrist-worn chronograph with an independent pusher at 2 o’clock that could start, stop and reset the chronograph seconds hand independently of the crown. In 1969, Breitling continued its quest and developed the first self-winding chronograph together with its partners, creating a major precedent in the history of timekeeping. Although the brand excels at measuring short periods of time, for its 140th anniversary it is pushing itself into an entirely different time scale by launching a new and significant innovation – a mechanical movement called Caliber B19 that combines a chronograph and a perpetual calendar.
