AIKON AUTOMATIC 42 TITANIUM
The Aikon is loosely based on the 1990s Calypso, with a profiled case, fixed bezel and six iconic claws. A variety of sizes and materials have been introduced in the past, but Maurice Lacroix chose the Automatic 42 (42mm) to debut the stylish titanium look, along with the Automatic Chronograph, which we’ll get to later. The case and bracelet are made from a mix of grade 2 and grade 5 titanium, creating an interesting contrast in color and finish. For example, the claws are made from grade 5 titanium, which can be polished to a shiny surface, while grade 2 titanium cannot.
Aside from the materials of the case and bracelet, the only other change is the dial. The dial is available in a vibrant purple hue or a muted, monochromatic gray. It’s in typical Aikon style, with a chequered pattern, applied hour markers and hands with Super-LumiNova, and a framed date window. Sandwiched between the dial and the sapphire crystal caseback is the Sellita SW200-based Caliber ML115. It offers a 38-hour power reserve and runs at 28,800vph. And then there’s the Aikon Automatic Chronograph Titanium, which is slightly larger than its time and date counterparts. At 44mm, the watch is fairly large, so the same mix of grade 2 and grade 5 titanium certainly helps with the wearing comfort. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first titanium Aikon Automatic Chronograph, but it is the first to feature mixed grades of titanium. Naturally, it’s in line with chronograph models we’ve seen in the past, with a striking bezel and flat crystals front and back. The pushers are partially covered and flanked by a hexagonal crown. For the dial, we have the choice of either an equally bold purple or a shiny gold, both with contrasting subdials and a framed date window. The subdials are either grey or black and feature a snailed finish for an interesting color and texture effect. It’s driven by the automatic Caliber ML112, which is based on the Sellita SW500. It beats at 28,800vph and has a running time of 48 hours when fully wound. It also sits on an integrated titanium bracelet (again, a mix of grade 2 and grade 5).
