Golfer Bubba Watson wears his newly released Richard Mille RM 38-02 Tourbillon "Lucky Pink," made of pink and white shock/scratch-resistant and extremely lightweight carbon fiber TPT. This timepiece is the fourth watch created by Bubba Watson in collaboration with the American brand ambassador.
The bold design of the previous caliber gave birth to the modern RM 38-02. The Bubba Watson is based on a Carbon TPT base plate with layers of parallel carbon filaments. Due to its hardness and exposed skeletonization, this material, which is ubiquitous in RM 38-02, is extremely difficult to machine. Carbon TPT is used to make the base plate. Several layers of concurrent filaments formed by splitting carbon threads make up the substance. Carbon TPT parts with a wall depth of 30 microns are wetted with resin and placed on a unique machine that rotates the fibers 45 degrees between each layer. Carbon TPT is produced at Richard Mille's component factory after being heated to 120 degrees Celsius and exposed to a pressure of 6 bars. Carbon TPT is known for its resilience to micro-cracks and cracks.

Since they are composed of countless layers of parallel lines separated by carbon fibers or silica fibers, the extraordinary surfaces present extremely regular yet utterly unique striations. For Quartz TPT, the silica layer is saturated in a pink matrix produced exclusively for Richard Mille and stitched on a custom machine. The machine rotates the weft thread 45 degrees between layers of pink and white silica or between layers of pink silica and carbon TPT.
Thanks to the three-part pull-out case form, the torque-limiting crown does not scratch the wearer's wrist. Two Nitrile O-ring seals guarantee water resistance to 50 meters and the housing is constructed of 20 spline screws in grade 5 titanium and 316L stainless steel wear resistant washers. The skeletonized carbon TPT baseplate is an impressive machining achievement. Before being approved as the main element of the RM 38-02, it underwent a series of rigorous tests to maximize its mechanical quality. The bridge plates are made of PVD-treated grade 5 titanium, a biocompatible, corrosion-resistant and extremely hard alloy that keeps the gear train running smoothly.
Titanium alloys are 90% titanium, 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium. This mixture further improves the mechanical properties of the material, which justifies its wide-ranging applications in the aerospace, aviation and automotive industries. Bridges such as baseplates undergo extensive testing to optimize their resistance characteristics.
