Rolex vs. Grand Seiko

Rolex Land-Dweller 36 vs. Seiko Grand Seiko SLGB005

I once again engaged in a fierce competition with my old rival, Jörg. This time, he chose a formidable opponent—the Seiko UFA SLGB005, a worthy rival to the Rolex Land-Dweller 36. I've seen this watch in person, and it's absolutely stunning. In fact, regardless of the color, the UFA is one of Seiko's best watches in recent years. So, what could possibly challenge such an excellent timepiece? Well, Rolex is probably going to have to put up a good show.

Before Watches and Wonders 2025, it was almost an open secret that Rolex would be returning to the integrated bracelet sports watch market. However, what we didn't know at the time was that this new collection would also feature a noteworthy new movement.

The dial details and design are comparable to Grand Seiko. Admittedly, the Land-Dweller's dial design has indeed unsettled some of the brand's most loyal fans. Its unique textured pattern and the combination of baton hour markers and Arabic numerals are truly eye-catching. Initially, I had some hesitation, but after handling and trying it on, I'm convinced the overall design is excellent. And, like the Grand Seiko, I believe Rolex will release more color options in the future.

General Construction and Finishing

Rolex still outperforms Seiko in overall wearing comfort. First, the Land-Dweller 36 is only 9.7 mm thick, while the SLGB005 is 11.4 mm thick. Secondly, the bracelet. Although neither watch has a micro-adjustment clasp, Rolex's Jubilee bracelet feels as smooth and supple as metal fabric, while Seiko's bracelet feels slightly rougher. However, Rolex's bracelet craftsmanship is unparalleled, so matching it is no easy feat. Furthermore, while Seiko is renowned for its famous Zaratsu polishing technique, Rolex is equally adept at case construction. The clean, flowing lines, the exquisite white gold fluted bezel, and the perfect transition between the case and bracelet are all highlights of this timepiece.

Another innovative movement follows: The Rolex 7135 is a new chronometer-certified automatic movement in the Land-Dweller series. This 39-jewel movement features a silicon hairspring, Dynapulse escapement, and ceramic balance wheel pivot, offering a 66-hour power reserve. Admittedly, its accuracy cannot match that of Grand Seiko's semi-electric movements, but for Rolex, it is undoubtedly a significant advancement. While not a fully natural escapement, this movement promises lower friction and an impressive frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour. I personally admire these two competing movements, but if I had to choose, I would always prefer a purely mechanical movement.

The Rolex Land Cruiser is priced similarly to the Seiko SLGB005. Price isn't the primary consideration here; the key is choosing your preferred movement type and watch style. There's no right or wrong answer, but you must make a choice. As always, we welcome you to share your reasons for your selection.
