Sometimes what the world wants is a more normal version, and in a way, a worse version is already available. This phenomenon applies to cars, cameras, and, of course, watches. Alas, the watch drew more criticism, mostly for its large screw-down chrono pushers and odd dial layout. How widely Spring Drive's benefits and truly unrivaled technological advancements are understood is harder to assess, but it's probably more confusing than it appears.

The new 2023 Grand Seiko Tentagraph SLGC001 should be evaluated in the context of the Grand Seiko chronographs before it, as that is the best way to understand how and why it performs. As such, the SLGC001 has a traditional 3-6-9 dial layout with a date of 04:30 surrounded by trapezoidal hour markers and a ceramic bezel, making it look more ordinary. Looking further ahead, you can see that the chronograph pushers are mushroom-shaped, perhaps to add a bit of playfulness to the composition, and are set in a nicely arched case profile.high quality replica watches

On the wrist, the Grand Seiko Tentagraph SLGC001 is worn like many other bulky chronographs. The SLGC001 is 43.2mm wide and 15.3mm thick, and its lugs, while nicely curved and in proportion to the rest, aren't exactly short. Despite titanium's relatively light weight—"high-strength titanium," as Grand Seiko calls it—you won't forget to own the Tentagraph in a hurry. That's not to say it's uncomfortable, because it's not like that, but it gets caught in the sleeve, that's for sure. What’s more, glance down at your wrist and you’ll find a regular chronograph with Grand Seiko flair – something apparently a lot of people have been asking for, and the Grand Seiko has finally delivered.

Part of the reason for the delay was that Grand Seiko chose to develop a new movement with a traditional dial layout – again in response to the many requests it had received. Built around the 9SA5 base movement, the Tentagraph is powered by the Grand Seiko Caliber 9SC5, the brand's first self-winding mechanical chronograph. It runs at 5Hz and has a power reserve of 72 hours, the longest of any other 5Hz chronograph on the market today. This is thanks in no small part to the 9SA5’s ultra-efficient new double-impulse escapement.

Flip the Tentagraph over and peer through the sapphire crystal case back and you'll see that the 9SC5 is a stunning movement of overwhelming quality and sophistication. The collection of fine and precious details doesn't end with the movement; they extend to the exterior as well. The aforementioned chronograph pushers have neat little beveled edges, the crown embosses the GS logo against a matte background, and the titanium case is as handsome as any in this price segment — more impressive than what Rolex has achieved. Impressive as the nearly identically priced but relatively underequipped RLX Titanium Yacht-Master (hands-on here). Equally impressive is the metal - and unassuming in the image - are the beveled and polished sub-dial surrounds. These frames are one of the most prominent and expensive-looking features on the dial, rather than the barely visible Mount Iwate motif, which was inspired by the outline of the ridge visible through the windows of Grand Seiko’s Shizukuishi studio.

All in all, the Grand Seiko Tentagraph SLGC001 is unique not only in its name, but in its shape and appearance. The Tentagraph is a beautifully crafted, lightweight, high-tech chronograph, crafted to a higher specification using more modern materials than the steel Daytona, yet costing less than that benchmark. Still, for some of us, the Tentagraph will be overshadowed by its quirky predecessor, the Spring Drive Chronograph, a unique Shopping replica watches that retailed for around half the price before high inflation.
