Jacob & Co.'s New Bugatti Chiron Watch Looks Like It Has a Supercar Engine Inside
It's like a 16-cylinder engine that fits on your wrist.
Jacob & Co. has unleashed yet another time beast in the watch world. The renowned New York watchmaker has just unveiled a new high-complication tourbillon inspired by the high-performance Bugatti Chiron.
The watch is one of a handful of timepieces from the two luxury brands' multi-year partnership that began in 2019. Like its predecessor, the watch features a functional miniature replica of the Chiron's W16-cylinder engine to please petrolheads, though it doubles down on the bling.
In fact, this iteration boasts no fewer than 190 baguette white diamonds, 109 baguette black sapphires, and 42 baguette orange sapphires, all discreetly set in an 18K white gold tonneau-shaped case. Jacob & Co. says gem setters use new know-how and advanced techniques to correctly set rare stones. Measuring 55mm x 44mm, the case also has the same sleek lines as the Chiron and lots of Bugatti badges for good size.
Like the French brand's curve-hugging supercars, there's a lot of precision engineering at work in this six-figure wrist candy, including a flying tourbillon set on a 30-degree incline. Similar to the real-life Chiron's 8.0-liter 16-cylinder engine capable of a formidable 1,500 horsepower, the watch features 16 miniature pistons and a miniature solid steel crankshaft that moves up and down like a regular mill. Meanwhile, two "turbochargers" (fewer than the actual Bugatti's four) spin in series for added dynamism.
The watch is again equipped with Jacob & Co.'s JCAM37 hand-wound movement, which consists of approximately 578 parts. It's suspended in four positions, with parts similar to the Chiron's actual car shock absorbers, clearly visible through a sapphire crystal window. The movement has a 60-hour power reserve, indicated by the universal air pump symbol on the side of the instrument at nine o'clock.
JACOB & CO BUGATTI CHIRON TOURBILLON WATCH
If you build a watch that bears the Bugatti Chiron name, you need to have the guts to stand behind it; that's why brands like Jacob & Co come to mind naturally.
The base of the watch is a movement modeled after the 16-cylinder engine that powers the Chiron; an attempt to express the immense power of the motor in a delicate movement. The complex watch is made from 578 individual parts, using what appear to be pistons and crankshafts. Jacob & Co spent a full year developing a tourbillon cage that gives a full view of the rotating escapement, shaped like a Bugatti's grille.
The watch features a black color scheme with Chiron blue accents, making it a complete horological representation of one of the greatest cars of all time.
