Urwerk UR-120 "Spock"
Urwerk is known for naming its creations, often in recognition of the design inspiration for a particular watch. In this case, the UR-120 is affectionately known as "Spock," thanks to the rotating hour block that splits as it spins around its own axis, creating a Vulcan-like salute-like appearance.
The UR-120 is not an entirely new watch from Urwerk, as it is actually a modern interpretation of the company's famous UR-110 model, which won a GPHG award in 2011. Urwerk retired the UR-110 in 2019 and released a unique watch made of Bakelite, which was auctioned off for charity.
While the previous UR-110 and subsequent UR-120 both used an orbiting satellite complication to tell the time and had an asymmetrical case, the newer version benefits from a redesign, resulting in a more compact and stylish creation.
Since Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei launched the label in 1997, their creations have garnered a loyal following. Given its futuristic looks and cutting-edge mechanics, the Urwerk watch isn't for everyone; it's for everyone. However, those who appreciate modern haute horlogerie understand that few do it better than Baumgartner and Frey. So, what are the prices of Urwerk watches on the secondary market?
It's worth noting that determining market value isn't as straightforward as it is for watch brands, given how few Urwerk watches are produced each year, and how few are actually sold on the second-hand market (the people who buy them tend to keep them). Tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, or even millions of watches are produced every year. Remember, Urwerk produces around 150 watches per year. So, take these market prices with a grain of salt -- it's not an exact science, but an educated estimate. Also, as always, value will depend on factors such as condition, materials and provenance.
