The connection between design studio and watchmaker Porsche Design and the automotive world is clear! What’s the meaning behind the name…? In the early 1990s, FAT International, a French logistics company, set an ambitious goal: to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In close cooperation with Porsche and former racing driver Joachim Dauer, the duo brought the legendary Porsche 962 back to the track. With innovative modifications and a clever interpretation of the rules, the Porsche 962 in FAT International livery won the overall victory at Le Mans in 1994. Years later, Butzi Porsche's nephew Ferdi Porsche set the goal of re-establishing the FAT International name as a modern motorsport community. Today, the name is synonymous with exciting events such as the FAT Ice Race, the re-creation of the historic ice race on Lake Zell, and the reopening of the iconic "Mankei" hut on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. This weekend saw the launch of the 2025 edition of the FAT Ice Race, which also meant the launch of the new Chronograph 1. A follow-up to the 2023 edition, which you can see here, the new Chronograph 1 FAT 2025 edition switches tones with a black case and bracelet, and a strong glow from the dial side… as opposed to the classic 1972 Chronograph 1, which had a matte black dial with white hands and hour markers. The FAT 2025 edition is a titanium watch that follows the classic 1972-style styling of all previous models, but is completely coated in black titanium carbide and features a glass bead blasted finish. The watch has a diameter of 40.8mm and a thickness of 14.15mm, and features a screw-down crown and a solid screw-down caseback, and is water-resistant to 100 meters.
The real highlight of this new model is the dial. Thanks to a full coating of Super-LumiNova, the dial is a dazzling white, exactly like we’ve seen on Porsche Design chronographs luxury replica Watches. During the day, at least, the bottom of the dial is completely white, with black printed markers, hour markers, track and logo for a strong contrast. All hands are black, except for the red central seconds hand. At night, the dial glows thanks to a generous amount of SLN, making it the perfect tool for 24-hour races. There are two more “Easter eggs” on this dial. First, the silhouette of the Porsche 962 adorns the hour counter, while the FAT International logo appears below the date window. The second trick is the aforementioned calendar function, as the English date display adds an extra unique touch, with “FAT” in FAT’s signature red replacing “SAT” and “SUN”
Inside the case is the proprietary caliber WERK 01.240, a self-winding, COSC-certified flyback chronograph movement based on the 7750 architecture. It beats at 4Hz and can store up to 48 hours of energy when fully wound. Echoing the look of the 1972 model, this new Chronograph 1 FAT 2025 Edition is fitted with a black titanium carbide-coated bracelet and a titanium folding clasp with fine adjustment. In addition, the watch comes with two additional straps: a white fabric strap with the FAT Ice Race emblem and an exclusive "FAT Mankei strap" made of purple fabric and leather. All straps are equipped with a quick-change mechanism.
