Color is the new protagonist of many watch brands, often making up for the lack of novelty, but will undoubtedly bring a lighter mood to the scene. You'll notice that the classic black and silver dials are being replaced by bolder and bolder colors. Ulysse Nardin followed this trend during the Geneva Watch Days with two 39mm Lady Diver models and a 45mm Blast Tourbillon, both of which were surprising. Instead of colouring the dial, UN has adorned the bezel with a series of multi-coloured gemstones designed to evoke the shimmering colours of its ground-breaking silicon escapement. As the first brand to introduce a silicon-component escapement in 2001 Freak, UN draws inspiration from the iridescent colors produced by the material.

Ulysse Nardin will go down in history as the pioneer of silicon in watchmaking. Since the early 2000s, silicon has been a promising watchmaking material due to its non-magnetic properties, corrosion resistance, and light-elastic properties that do not deform over time. No lubrication is required as the silica layer hardens and stabilizes the component, making it insensitive to thermal changes. UN has been using silicon for over 20 years in the manufacture of its regulating mechanisms, including the hairspring, and since 2006 (in partnership with Momoetic) has owned Sigatec, a company specializing in micro-mechanical components with micron precision and custom silicon parts. Released at the Geneva Watch Days two years ago, the Blast Skeleton Tourbillon is a more supercharged Blast model with a more edgier, sharper case to emulate the lines of a stealth fighter, as well as double Xs and rectangles that run across the skeletonized dial. This also marks the first time that a skeleton tourbillon has been equipped with an automatic movement. The latest 50-meter water-resistant Blast Rainbow features the same specs as the 2020 version, featuring a 45mm black DLC-coated titanium case with a black ceramic upper case with a polished and sandblasted finish.
The black DLC-coated stainless steel bezel exudes a rainbow of colors. The bezel features 38 baguette-cut gemstones that simulate the rainbow hues of silicon with red rubies and orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and pink sapphires.
The flange of the skeleton dial is also set with 12 coloured gemstones representing the hour markers. The iconic X shape below the skeletonized rectangle reveals the UN-172 automatic tourbillon movement. The highlight of this piece is the 2.5Hz automatic silicon tourbillon regulator nested in a bold, completely redesigned black X-shaped frame at 6 o’clock. A closer look reveals the purple silicon escape wheel. Despite the number of visible components, the barrel at noon and the tourbillon at 6 o'clock add symmetry to the composition. A tiny micro-rotor made of platinum sits on top of the barrel, visible from the front of the watch at 12 o’clock, a star-shaped structure inside a circle. Undoubtedly, the Blast Rainbow is limited to 50 pieces, reflecting the difficulty of sourcing colored gemstones of the same hue. It comes with a water-resistant velvet rubber strap or a black alligator leather strap, both with a black DLC titanium and ceramic deployant clasp.

Available in two case materials and dials – polished stainless steel with a white dial and black DLC steel with a black dial – the Lady Diver Rainbow’s bezel is set with coloured gemstones. To reproduce the effect of the color gradation, 40 brilliant-cut stones of different shades light up the stationary concave bezel.
