Patek Philippe presents two variants of its classic pairing complication: the Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Ref. 5271/11P and the Ref. 5271/12P are inlaid with blue sapphires and rubies respectively, each with a graduated dial of matching color. In terms of design, the new reference. The 5271s retains the classic layout and unique feel of the brand’s famous perpetual calendar chronographs, but tweaks the dial a bit to give it a more contemporary look. Then, the colored stones turn the normally staid watch into something over the top.
While gem-set watches are nothing new to Patek Philippe, the brand has been arguably one of the most important proponents of bringing highly complicated gem-set watches mainstream, albeit at very high prices. With these two new additions, Patek Philippe is also making such watches more accessible, at least in a relative sense. There's no question that they're nearly impossible to get, at least in the short term, but at least they're not special order or one-off models like most watches have been in the past.
More broadly, the two new models illustrate why Patek Philippe acquired a large stake in Swiss gem-setting specialist Salanitro in September. A new twist on Ref. 5271P
Introduced in 2011, the ref. was the first jewel-set model of the current generation of perpetual calendar chronographs. 5271 has a new look, with a graduated lacquered dial that complements the sapphire or ruby on the case.
But the new model isn't just about bling and color. Both have a more modern dial aesthetic thanks to some modest tweaks. Unlike their predecessor references. 5271P set with diamonds, new without the tachymeter scale and the “chin” on the lower edge of the dial. Instead, they went with a more aesthetically pleasing railroad-style outer rail. The new model also features faceted dauphine hands instead of the more classic leaf-shaped hands.
