The vibrant royal blue hue of the HM8 Mark 2 is achieved using mineral-derived metallic pigments, similar to those used in metallic car paints. These pigments are carefully mixed with the resin according to a precise recipe, including parameters such as mixing time, mixing temperature, speed and duration. The complexity of creating this double-curved sapphire is 30 to 40 times more expensive than a typical domed sapphire, and only one supplier was willing to take on the challenge.

Developed exclusively for MB&F, CarbonMacrolon® is a composite material consisting of a polymer matrix infused with carbon nanotubes, which enhance its strength and rigidity. Compared to conventional carbon fiber reinforcements, CarbonMacrolon® has superior tensile strength and stiffness, is strong and can be processed using a variety of finishing techniques such as coloring, polishing, sandblasting, painting and satin finishing. Equally hidden but equally innovative is the new crown design, which features a “double clutch” system reminiscent of automotive mechanics. Pressing the crown and turning it three-quarters of a turn releases it, thus optimizing space and enhancing system safety.

The idea didn’t end there, as the task was to make the numbers look almost digital or electronic. This was achieved with a sapphire disc coated with a black metallic coating, making the numbers clearly visible. Super-LumiNova® was then added underneath the sapphire disc, making the luminescence completely flat.

As mentioned earlier, Max took inspiration for this dial from the unconventional design of the Amida Digitrend. MB&F has used a sapphire prism to display the jumping hours and minutes vertically, although they are actually laid flat on top of the movement. The time is displayed through a window reminiscent of vintage speedometers on the front of the case, designed for easy reading while driving.
