In 2012, Richard Mille launched the RM 56 Felipe Masse Sapphire Tourbillon watch, which was the first watch to use a pure sapphire crystal case at the time. The subsequent RM 56-01 went a step further and added a sapphire crystal base, bridges and third wheel.
The base plate of the RM 56-02 Sapphire Tourbillon is now made of grade 5 titanium, while the bridges and case are made of sapphire crystal. The movement is suspended within the sapphire case by a single braided cable that is just 0.35 mm thick. It is woven in a system consisting of 4 pulleys on posts at the corners of the movement and a further 6 pulleys placed along the perimeter of the movement.
Richard Mille says: “The tension of the cable is perfectly controlled by a micro ratchet at 9 o’clock. The entire cable unit is connected to a separate indicator located below the 12 o’clock position, allowing easy visual inspection of the cable tension to ensure that it is always within the specified specification run within.”
