Watches and Wonders 2024: GRAND SEIKO launches two dress watches, a GMT and a tourbillon
The brand’s two new formal high quality watches replica make their debut, equipped with a new manual winding high-frequency movement.
Grand Seiko’s new watches showcase the brand’s watchmaking expertise. Highlights of this launch are the new hand-wound high-frequency movement in the new dress watch launched in the Evolution 9 series, the new color-changing dial of the Spring Drive GMT chronograph, and the Kodo constant force tourbillon inspired by the dawn.

Unlike the Spring Drive models, Grand Seiko manufactures its classic mechanical watches in Shizukuishi, 700 kilometers away. The eponymous watch studio was designed by star architect Kengo Kuma. In northern Japan, white birch trees grow abundantly, and their bark forms the template for the dial’s structure.
Compared to the SLGH005 “White Birch” launched a few years ago (which won the coveted Red Dot Design Award in 2022), the dial pattern this time is horizontal. The power reserve is 80 hours thanks to two barrels and the double-pulse escapement typical of Grand Seiko. The display of the current remaining power reserve is located on the back of the movement and can therefore be seen through the sapphire crystal case back. Due to the elimination of the automatic assembly, the movement has become flatter than the 9SA5, which also works to the watch's advantage: the 38.6 mm diameter case remains under 10 mm, and the overall height is 9.95 mm. There are many ways to inspire your passion for Grand Seiko. For some it's the Japanese origins, for others it's the intricate technology, for others it's the unique dial. The new Spring Drive Chronograph GMT (reference SBGC275) brings it all together. The orange-red color of the dial is immediately eye-catching: it is inspired by the sunrise in the Hotaka Mountains in the Shinshu region of central Japan. Nearby is Shiojiri, where Grand Seiko produces Spring Drive movements and watches. The first watch to feature a Spring Drive with an automatic winding mechanism was the 2004 Grand Seiko. 20 years later, the manufacturer launches the SBGC275 to celebrate the birth of the 9R movement series, which is limited to 700 pieces. Kodo Constant Force Tourbillon
New Kodo Constant Force Tourbillon Watch (Model: SLGT005)
Inspired by the Dawn, its design was inspired by the first mechanical complication, the Codo Constant Force Tourbillon, launched in 2022 and winner of the GPGH Grand Prix for Precision Time that year.
Powering it is the hand-wound caliber 9ST1, which beats at 28,800 vph and has a 72-hour power reserve. The watch features a 43.8mm case made of 950 platinum and bright hard titanium, topped by a box-shaped sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. The heartbeat of creation, the tourbillon is visible at 6 o’clock. Complementing the watch is a unique white leather strap, tanned with natural materials. In addition, the watch also comes with a charcoal gray alligator leather strap. The watch is water-resistant to 100 meters.
