It’s hard to overstate the magnitude of the impact the Freak made when it was launched in 2001, with its emphasis on high-tech silicon and the absence of traditional hands or dials. The new Freak S “Nomad” continues this lineage, with a futuristic carbon fiber and titanium case handcrafted in the 18th century and a sand-coloured CVD guilloché hour dial, blending the past and the future in one impressive in the watch.
The new Freak S “Nomad” features the iconic “Freak” display, with a large central flying disc rotating on its axis, acting as a minute hand, while a guilloché hour disc rotates below. This flying turntable features twin oscillators with a silicon balance wheel and an escapement coated with DIAMonSIL, an ultra-high-tech form of diamond-coated silicon that delivers precision and durability. This is all housed within a lightweight titanium case with an anthracite PVD-coated titanium bezel for setting the time (after the bezel is unlocked by a titanium lock at 6 o'clock). The case sides are made of carbon fiber and are shaped to fit the lugs of the luxury watches replica. The watch comes with an automatic 'Grinder' system and measures 45mm, which should be around 13.7mm based on past Freak S releases.
Last year, the folks at Ulysse Nardin took me on a historical tour of the evolution of the Freak. Twenty-three years on, the watch remains incredibly futuristic and impressive, but it’s hard to imagine the reaction when it was first released. One of the double-edged swords, however, is that the design is so refined that even as developments and aesthetics change, it's easy to recognize Freak at a glance and think of it as something you've seen before. How much has changed?

The original Freak S probably deserves more attention, the Freak S's UN-251 movement had some crazy features like tilting twin oscillators and a vertical differential. The case features softer colors – titanium case, anthracite PVD-coated titanium bezel, carbon fiber flanks and lugs – and a sandy guilloche pattern on the hour dial, compared to past gold Freaks. It better complements the futuristic design. The flying carousel/minute is also a mean looking anthracite PVD. Still, it looks sharper than past versions in the images provided, though perhaps not as much as the Freak X. Unfortunately there are no photos of the watch wearing it, but I will be checking out the new Freak S Nomad in person in a few days and I will let you know what it looks like.
