A Bell & Ross watch with Squiggle master Alain Silberstein
These three watches are a 42mm primary color themed party for your wrist.
Bell & Ross has teamed up with designer Alain Silberstein for the fourth round of the Grail Watch collection – a project founded by industry veteran Wei Koh early last year, with independent watchmakers curating and selling limited-edition best replica watch site.
If you knew Silberstein a little, you'd recognize his strong aesthetic from a mile away. In fact, you'll recognize his work without a hint, because that's what makes him unique in the field of vision. Close your eyes and you will see red, yellow, blue. Triangle, circle and square.
Silberstein is no stranger to viewing collaborative work. After his namesake company declared bankruptcy in 2012, he gained a foothold in the industry through successful collaborations with firms such as MB&F and Louis Erard. In last year's first issue of Grail Watch, he collaborated with Benoît Mintiens on a limited-edition Ressence—a colorful and utterly unique watch that caught my eye during a particularly long report in stainless steel.

All three watches are crafted from black ceramic and come with black rubber straps: the iconic Silberstein primary colors and shapes are printed on Bell & Ross canvas straps. BR 03-92 KLUB 22 only has the time, but at 4:30 there is a blink and a date display that you will miss. It has a very large red circle to mark the hours, an oversized blue arrow to indicate the minutes, and a curved S-shaped yellow seconds hand. This watch is equipped with automatic movement Caliber BR.CAL-302.
The BR 03-92 Marine 22 is a diver's watch featuring Silberstein's "Maxi" hands, blue circular hands with large luminous scales, and a red triangle with luminous material inlaid for the minute hand to read elapsed time time dive time. There is a two-tone ceramic bezel with the insert in red for the last 20 minutes and complete set of 20 minute markers and luminous indexes. Rated to 300 meters, the dive watch has a screw-down crown and is powered by the same self-winding caliber BR.CAL-302 with date function as the chronograph-only models.
The chronograph BR 03-94 Krono 22 is fully loaded with no less than five different Silberstein hands. The red circles represent hours and the blue arrows represent minutes, but now the yellow S-shaped hand serves as the chronograph seconds hand. Additionally, the blue triangle acts as an indicator for the 30-minute counter and the yellow arrow acts as a running seconds indicator. The chronograph pushers are inlaid with a yellow lacquered rectangle for the start/stop function and a blue rectangle for the reset function. At its core, BR 03 is utility. It was inspired by aviation cockpit instruments. I'm not usually a fan of circles inside squares when taken off a dashboard (I'm an exception for Braun alarm clocks and Marc Newson Solaris), but this watch was designed to be a solid canvas, leaving room for Silberstein's magic without would lose its charm of its own identity. This is the hallmark of a successful collaboration.
I admit there is a lot to see. Even for me, I'm a devout minimalist. Yes, I was drawn to the crazy shapes and color layers, the fact that it looks like a funny scientist made it in his Bauhaus color lab, but I stayed with the watch because it still has a strong sense of balance. Every hand, every mark is intentional. In fact, the larger hands do make these replica luxury watches more useful than you might think.
I have a soft spot for quirky, avant-garde designs in the watch world, and I believe it can provide much-needed relief in a sea of seriousness and reference numbers, so I've become very familiar with Silberstein. Every time I see any of his eponymous works in old auction catalogues, I'm reminded of the image of the living room in the 80's movie Ruthless People (a Danny DeVito classic if you like scary/amazing 80's interior design, you have to watch).
While Silberstein's '80s Memphis style is in vogue, there's no doubting that his main design principles are classic Bauhaus. You have to read this with your eyes closed to miss it. But no-nonsense industrial design paired with his trademark humor is the cleverness here. Hey, isn't that what modernism is all about, form follows function?
Is this really the replica watches for sale you bought to measure lap times or dive times? Probably not. But it's fun, and I'll have a healthy dose of fun on a very gray mid-January.
