HYT H1 Watch Hands On
HYT is crowded. Many went to hear Vincent Perriard discuss the inner workings of the H1, a new replica swiss watches from his new brand HYT. The HYT, which has been teased for months and recently debuted, is a high-end geek watch that aims to marry a traditional mechanical watch with a liquid. After the meeting, I caught up with Perriard to get a hands-on look at the new watch and to get an introduction from the man himself.
If you know Perriard's past work, you're familiar with his passions and design decisions. Futurism and "doing things differently" are factors that help motivate him. He speaks very quickly in French when explaining watches, and shares the same level of insight and enthusiasm in English when showing off his toys. Hands-on H1 is pretty much what I expected it to be -- which is fine. A bold, futuristic design that's big on the wrist but still wearable. The case is 48.8mm wide and 17.8mm thick. With drop ears, it will fit most wrists well. You can't help but notice the two bellows in the movement and the luminous green liquid ring that indicates the hours. The conceptual execution seems flawless, especially as you adjust the hours back and forth and the green goo moves quickly across the scale. It basically uses pressure, but as far as I know, nothing like this has ever been done with a crown - and probably not on such a small scale.

As I mentioned, Perriard likes to make high-end toys. The H1 feels like that. It's like something a bright kid would dream up. It's also something a big kid will happily wear. A great deal of technical expertise is required to fully understand the function of the movement, but practical concepts can be enjoyed by almost anyone. I think Perriard understands this concept best – if you're going to have a successful new watch brand selling big-ticket items, it needs to be something that wows the average person.
The dial features retrograde liquid hour indicators and a minute subdial - both easy to read. There is an auxiliary seconds subdial and a useful power reserve indicator for the hand-wound movement. Perriard flipped over to the back of the watch and explained how he wanted the movement to be finished and decorated in a relatively classic fashion — not wanting to potentially alienate hardcore consumer luxury replica watches enthusiasts. The cheeky accordion bellows on the dial are something you've never seen on a dial before. An iconic element like this will surely become the hallmark of the brand.
It does give the rich, rather than the super rich, a better chance to own and enjoy a highly exotic watch. I myself, like everyone else, are enjoying the style and balance, as well as the technological innovation, that the H1 offers. Perriard promises more and more sophistication in the future, so I expect the H1 to be their entry-level model for the next few years.
