More than 600 people attended this week's Breitling Summit in Zurich, Switzerland. Guests included global retailers, members of the international media, collectors and Breitling employees. All have a hunch that what's about to happen will be something they've never experienced before, and they're right for more than one reason. Attendees must show up on Tuesday morning at one of four Swissair counters marked "Breitling" at Zurich Airport, where they will receive a Breitling boarding pass, seat assignment and gate information before entering a facility. There is a pre-boarding area with champagne, bloody marys and various other cocktails, as well as packed lunches that passengers can take onboard. 70 is the new 20
On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Breitling Navitimer, several new products were released and presented to more than 600 attendees on three different Swissair flights. Due to the relatively short flight from Zurich to Geneva, those who can't see all the novelty up close are invited to touch and feel at the Le Chef restaurant at Geneva Airport.
The new Navitimers may look like the old from a distance (round slide rule, stick hour markers, chronograph trio, notched bezel), but a closer look reveals modern improvements and additions. These 2022 Navitimers are available in multiple case sizes: 46mm, 43mm and 41mm. The new version is available in two case materials (stainless steel or 18K red gold), as well as a choice of strap/bracelet (semi-shiny alligator leather or stainless steel or 18K red gold seven-row metal bracelet). The colors of the new aviation chronograph dials are subtle, subdued and very special: ice blue, dark blue, dark green, mint green, copper, black and silver. But for those familiar with the Navitimer range, the most notable change is the return of the AOPA wing to its original position at 12 o'clock.
Navitimer is one of the most recognizable watches in the history of pilot and/or tool watches. As Mr. Kern said, the word "icon" should not be taken lightly, but the Breitling Navitimer, at 70 years old, has come of age, and that's what it is. It's a personalized wearable icon that resonates with collectors and novices, young and old alike.
